Change Cruelty

Cruelty is indifference to suffering, and even pleasure in inflicting it and kindness? Well, a little fearful woman once said to me that kindness is a weakness. Yet, surprising as it may seem, cruelty is an awful lot easier to express than kindness because it's all about not caring a tot about anybody's interests, but your own.

Kindness is the act or the state of being kind, being marked by good, pleasant in disposition and having concern for others. It is known as a virtue, and recognized as a value in many cultures and religions. Simply put, kindness is a value that is able to be shared, whereas cruelty is not. Kindness arises from a foundation of morality, belonging to human kind only in the sense that we have the ability to communicate it with like minded souls called mammals.

Domesticated animals do more than talk about kindness, they need it because of the huge amount of suffering they endure for us and because of us.  Essentially, they are our wards and as their guardians, we are abusing them. What kind of guardian are we if cruelty is what we are exchanging in return for their life? While it may have been a good idea in the beginning, the domestication of animals for food, meat eating has turned healthy living into a bloody hell.  More than half of the worlds population of earthlings is being ravaged by human beings.  The desecration of mammals by mammals is enormous and humans are the biggest eaters and users of mammalian flesh and bone and skin than any other living creature on earth. We are at the top of the food chain, at what cost?  The growing debate about whether or not a human is a carnivore or a herbivore stems from diseases like cancer, heart disease, arthritis  diabetes and mental illness. It is well documented that a carnivore has a stronger urge for the taste of blood than a herbivore. It is well documented that non animal eating humans feel more peaceful and more in tune with the earth around them than meat eaters.

The abuse of power through acts of cruelty happens in the home as well as in the workplace; And in a workplace where animals are literally kept like prisoners of war, until they are hung upside down, and profusely bled from being knifed in their neck until dead, power abuse is common.
The ability of one human being to express cruelty to another has been part of human life as far back as history can take us. In any environment where ignorance and superstition thrives, so too thrives the practice of one human infecting cruelty into another. Why? What is it about humans wanting to act out aggression, for no other reason than feeling the release of a personal affliction of negative emotions? Is cruelty in the duty statement of every animal worker or not? My guess is that it is not.

Abuses of power happen every day, and most people have a story to tell about a cruel person they know in their workplace.  Cruelty thrives in anti-social human relationship environments, and in environments filled with kindness that chooses not to fight back.  Domestic animals choose not to fight back because of the faith they have in their leaders who, unfortunately for them, so happen to be humans. Humans leading them to their death through a cruel pathway of pain, suffering and despair is not a pretty sight. I guess this is why most consumers do not get to see it.

Today, eating has got out of hand through eating for eating sake. Non-clinical obesity is a greedy nations problem.  The domestication legacy, farming fore-parents gave their offspring so that we may thrive, is now shrouded in ungratefulness because of blind ignorance.  Do consumers know that cruelty is on the menu? Are consumers turning a blind eye to animal cruelty because of feelings of helplessness or a cruelty of their own? Do consumers truly know what they are eating?  Looking back in time, what did it mean to turn a blind eye to the Holocaust, the slaveries, the burning of witches?  In the dark ages, people suffered horrendous cruelties and in an age of enlightenment, the darkness is increasing because not everyone was saved.

Wild Canadian salmon, swimming upstream to lay and fertilize eggs, are being infected from the crushing amount of test tube salmon that are, growing up in cages, along the very river healthy salmon swim freely in. Yet, very soon the healthy salmon will exist no more because they are being infected by the lice accepting, test tube babies, growing up in the 'prisoner of war' cages lining the rivers of, the wilderness belonging to, the free Canadian salmon. The farmed  fish are being fed to children by unsuspecting parents who believe that anything farmed is safe to eat; While the healthy fish, who once were in abundance, are dying out from infections given to them by the caged fish now being plated up for human consumption.

Domesticated animals that are permanently pregnant, and filled with drugs to keep them alive long enough to be killed, fill containers named "produce" that parents buy for their children to eat. This 'produce' is from both physically and mentally, ill animals.  Mental abuse is a sure thing whenever un-resolved physical abuse is present, and the slavery abuse of cows and pigs, rabbits, chickens, ducks, horses and dogs is still far from being resolved.

Chemical companies are filing patients to secure ownership of the DNA of life. A DNA patient means that a profit making concern has the power to control everything related to that patient, and that everything is provided in packaging, designed to convince families, eating chemically controlled food is good, will make you smile and fill you with abundance.  The truth is, life is the true cost of what you pay when what is being offered is cruelty induced.

Contrary to popular belief, cows do not smile and are not happy when you open that fridge door to take out then buy their babies milk at cheaper and cheaper prices. In fact while you are drinking babies milk, the cows baby has already been slaughtered and the poor cow is going through another chemically induced pregnancy, so that you can pop back into the supermarket again in twelve months time, for another yearly dose of lactose intolerance.  What a great deal!  For the cost of a little change you can drink the mixed DNA  results of prisoner of war cage pregnancies, drug over doses, physical and mental cruelties, tortures and hangings: But it is only fair that cows should be punished for your need to socialise over regular cafe lattes, cake and sugar coated biscuits, paid for with your hard earned change kept in your fashionable cow hide wallet. Or is it?

While not every farming guardian undermines their responsibility to provide a supportive physical and social environment for those in their care, kind dairy farmers are sadly becoming extinct.  Economic resources, rising from decades of meeting the wants and needs of demanding human beings, is rapidly coming to a close. What there is left is being squeeze bled dry by live stock farmers desperate to stay in the game and this also means cutting corners.  African and Indigenous slaves were once considered to be part of the 'live stock' industry. What did cutting corners do for the health and well being of those victims of a consumer industry filled with cruelty?
How long is it going to take for the economic war, against the most vulnerable, to stop; And what will happen when it does?

Human consumers have a lot of power.  History repeatedly demonstrates that people are morally good. Yet, time and time again the morally corrupt pop up to undermine the day. Why? Is it because good people do nothing? Is it because good people are not protecting each other enough?  What would happen if a group of pigs suddenly decided enough was enough.  It may well be not so much intelligence holding them back from attacking their cruel guardians, but sheer ignorance from simply not knowing any better, from being tortured in cages day in and day out, from being far too dis-empowered, too weak, too drugged.  Pigs can't talk to us so obviously they don't think, right? In an age when animal feelings have been acknowledged by the neuro-science community, is it time to recognise that we 'materialists' might be the more ignorant about how another's life truly feels?
Is torture what a pigs life is all about? Is torture what a humans life is all about?  How many people in the world are dis-empowered through a lack of knowing that there is a better way of living: And that way is not so much about living in harmony with each other, but about knowing what on earth is going on? In fact some might say that earthly life is all about chaos and where there is chaos no body knows the complete truth of anything at all. So, obviously that makes it alright to accept whatever it is that is not understood in favour of denying what can be seen? I guess we don't need philosophy or education or science any more then. I guess the pigs have it, living in torture chambers is the key to a better and brighter future. Why didn't I think of that before the others, I could have made a small fortune. Cruelty rules ok? I think, it does not.

When it comes to changing the face of an economy, consumers hold the balance of power in the supermarket senate because the power of the consumer is in the way s/he votes. As a consumer, you have the power to end cruelty if you want to, by simply not buying into it.  To stop cruelty in pig farms, stop buying products that are made from pigs. To stop cruelty in dairy farms, stop buying products that come from cows.  To stop cruelty of horses, don't eat the meat.  While it is true, you will not see change happen over night, it is amazing what time can do and how it does solidify changes, even the smallest of ones, that are decided and acted upon right now. The more you practice a way of life, the stronger that way of life is enforced. When enough people think no, the focus of the no eventually becomes an act, albeit not without a fight.  The marketing of pig products will probably become more fierce and pigs will continue to be abused until the consumer message gets across loud and clear that cruelty is no longer an acceptable menu item.
Kindness to erase cruelty begins with an exchange very clearly named "no more".
Saying "no more" to cruelty means that you are now free to experience a little more kindness of your own.
You can also nurture yourself in the knowledge that you have just given your children the best gift ever, a kinder future.     © Chris Tyne, 2013

    re: Cultural Change.
"Its like you read my mind! You seem to know so much about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you could do with a few pics to drive the message home a little bit, but other than that, this is great blog. A fantastic read. I’ll definitely be back"

re: The Black Swan Of Change.
"Excellent essay. It looks like you have a very balanced, genuine understanding of reality, hope, and inner strength. You don't seem to be caught up in the cult of pseudo-positivity that is so popular nowadays."

Blessed are they who have learned to bear what they cannot change.
For every ailment under the sun, there is a remedy, or there is none.
If there be one, try to find it, If there be none, never mind it.
