How can you change unwanted habits? Charles Duhigg suggests 'by identifying what you want to achieve, identifying those habits blocking your sense of achievement, paying attention to the existing cues and rewards of identified bad habits; Then replacing and reinforcing new cues and rewards into the unwanted habits with the goal of turning them into better habits in accordance to your desired willful change. He suggests that paying attention to why you habitually do what you do should help to give you some insight into how to change a bad habit into a better one. He is not suggesting that you get rid of habits at all, rather that you 'reform' them into something more desirable: A habit that helps you to facilitate more willpower to achieve a desired goal like reading Mr. Duhigg's book for example. How To Create A Habit [below] offers CUE, REWARD and ROUTINE as his model of how to consciously create human behavioural change. |
